The Jungfrau is actually part of the larger Bernese Oberland region which makes up a large part of the mountain ranges in central (ish) Switzerland. The Jungfrau expands from Grindelwald in the east to Murren in the west with Wengen right in between the two.

01/26/16 01:04 PM 1 posts Sara, I have stayed in Mürren 8 times and Wengen once. Both are wonderful but Mürren is the most spectacular. The last time I had a group of 9 and we stayed in Mürren at the Eiger guesthouse ( not Eiger hotel) in a combination of rooms. Small, relatively inexpensive, and super friendly. Spectacular views from front rooms.

I think Murren is easier to get to/from (21 minutes Wengen->Lauterbrunnen and only 19 minutes Murren->Lauterbrunnen). I also think Murren is more authentic of a Swiss Village than the more glitzy Wengen. Wengen has lots more souvenir shops and restaurants and hotels. Murren has shops and hotels, restaurants, grocery store - but not as many as.

The Chalet Fontana in Murren is rated #1 on www.tripadvisor.com and it's the best bargain in the alps. Denise is a fantastic hostess and keeps the Chalet spotlessly clean and neat AND serves a hearty breakfast. There are loads of things to see and do in the Lauterbrunnen Valley and surrounding mountain villages of Murren, Gimmelwald and Wengen.

Wengen, Jungfrau Region I've stayed in both and prefer Wengen. I like the views better from Wengen (altho many, such as Enzian, prefer Murren) and it just seems like more of the quintessential Swiss experience to me there. It is somewhat easier to get in and out of Wengen than Murren.

For example the last service to Murren each evening leaves Lauterbrunnen at 20:31 but the last service to Wengen leaves Lauterbrunnen at 00:40, So if you end up having a long day out somewhere and maybe have an evening meal in Interlaken or somewhere like that then you may find you can't get back to Murren.
