The Fox Sparrow ( passerella iliaca) and Song Sparrow ( melospiza melodia) are both brown streaky birds. The Fox Sparrow that frequents Gabriola is the "Sooty' variety and has an almost-chocolate brown back and dark crown. Its breast is streaked with chevron-shaped spots that coalesce into one large brown spot in the centre of the chest.

At a quick glance, Sparrows appear as a brown flash, but subtle differences are key to proper identification. In particular, pay attention to crown colour, beak colour, throat and chest colour, wing bars and breast markings. Many Sparrows at this time of year are still displaying juvenile plumage making identification even more confusing.

American Robins, Song Sparrows and Red-winged Blackbirds are more common birds in summer in Ontario and Dark-eyed Juncos and Downy Woodpeckers are more common in winter in Ontario. More information about this can be found at the end of the article.

In Ontario, the Henslow's Sparrow lives in open fields with tall grasses, flowering plants, and a few scattered shrubs. It was once fairly common in scattered areas of suitable habitat south of the Canadian Shield. However, steep declines since the 1960s have all but wiped this bird out as a breeding species in Ontario.

One of the most common sparrows in Ontario is the House Sparrow (Passer domesticus). These small birds are characterized by their gray-brown plumage and black bib on their chest. They are English sparrows (not related to North American sparrows but rather to African weavers) and were introduced 1850-52 from Europe to Brooklyn, NY, to control insect pests. Through subsequent introductions and dispersals, the species spread across North America, reaching Québec City (1854), Ontario (1870) and across Canada (mid-1880s).
